Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev said the government has taken key steps during its first week in office, including submitting the draft state budget for 2026 after months of uncertainty and political tensions.
Speaking at the start of a government meeting, Radev said the proposed financial framework was challenging but necessary, arguing that it would provide stability after what he described as a period of uncertainty under previous administrations.
"The budget is difficult, but it has its merits. It is realistic, puts an end to the conjectures and will allow us to stand on solid ground for the coming year," Radev said. He added that the cabinet had inherited serious financial difficulties but assured citizens that social payments would continue.
"We inherited a looted treasury, but social payments are guaranteed and people can be calm," the prime minister said, adding that preparations for the 2027 budget had already begun.
Radev also criticized previous governments over their financial commitments related to support for Ukraine, saying they had left the country with a significant budget deficit while making long-term promises for assistance.
