Western Cape police vehicles are seen near a river in Philadelphia where officers recovered the body of a missing Chatsworth man during an ongoing murder investigation.

Authorities have broadened their investigation into the suspected mob justice killing of 38-year-old Cedick Jonathan van Schalkwyk after police discovered a second body in a river near Philadelphia, which belongs to another man from Chatsworth.

Van Schalkwyk was allegedly attacked outside his Chatsworth home late at night by a group of about 10 men who arrived in a bakkie and accused him of being involved in a robbery at a nearby farm.

Police have since confirmed that a 41-year-old Chatsworth man who was reported missing on Monday was found dead in the river on Wednesday. The discovery follows reports from community members that one of Van Schalkwyk's friends had allegedly been abducted after the attack.

Van Schalkwyk's nephew, who asked not to be named because he fears for his safety, said the group arrived at the family home demanding to see his uncle.
