Brentford have completed the free transfer of Callum Wilson on a one-year contract. The Athletic reported on June 30 that Brentford were in talks with Wilson, 34, over a potential free transfer. The striker’s contract with West Ham United expired in the summer, and he is among a number of attacking options under consideration by Brentford.Speaking to the club’s in-house media, Wilson said he spoke to Brentford midfielder and former England team-mate Jordan Henderson, who “sung the praises” of the club.“It’s nice, it’s amazing, I’m grateful for the opportunity,” said Wilson. “I’m delighted to be here and joining as part of the family.“I spoke with the manager (Keith Andrews). We had a good conversation and he was very enthusiastic. He told me about his ambition for the club and what his ambitions and desires are, and I felt like I could add quality to that.“Having watched and played against Brentford many times, I liked the feel and togetherness of the squad. I thought I could see myself being a part of it.“They were good games and Brentford played really well. I liked the way that the midfielders played and everybody was playing forward early. As a striker, you know you’re going to get many opportunities, which is fantastic.”Wilson also acknowledged his record of 95 career Premier League goals, and said he feels he can hit 100 during the season. He scored seven times in 35 appearances for West Ham last season as they suffered relegation to the Championship for the first time since 2011.Brentford head coach Andrews said: “He gives us more options in that area of the pitch, and will help Igor Thiago and Kaye Furo with the experience that he has. He’s just got that nous to score goals, as well as that experience around the training ground.”Wilson was in talks to leave West Ham in January, five months after his arrival. Celtic enquired about the forward’s availability, but he stayed at the London Stadium for the remainder of the campaign, and was largely reduced to substitute appearances in the second half of the season.Wilson had previously spent five years at Newcastle United, where he scored 49 times in 130 appearances. He left St James’ Park after the north east club decided against taking up the option to extend his deal. His final two seasons with Newcastle had been disrupted by injury, after a career-best 18-goal return in 2022-23.The Englishman also enjoyed a successful six-year spell with Bournemouth, where he recorded 67 goals and 28 assists in 187 appearances.
