After years of exhibiting at some of the world’s leading museums and galleries, internationally acclaimed South African visual activist and artist Zanele Muholi is bringing a major solo exhibition home celebrating two decades of visual activism.
Kanye Nawe, Alongside You opens at Southern Guild in Cape Town on July 18, marking Muholi’s first major solo exhibition in South Africa in years. Spanning more than two decades of work, the exhibition brings together photography, sculpture, and film celebrating Black LGBTQIA+ lives while exploring themes of identity, memory, resilience, and belonging.
The exhibition marks a significant homecoming for Muholi, whose work has earned international acclaim and who recently received the 2026 Hasselblad Award.
“Coming home this year feels profound,” Muholi said.
The exhibition coincides with several personal and national milestones. It marks 20 years since Muholi began the Faces and Phases portrait series, which documents Black LGBTQIA+ communities and was created in response to violence, discrimination, and invisibility faced by many members of the community.
