Emily Eden, a pre-modern British artist, was a compulsive communicator. She excelled in many expressive forms as a debater, society gossip, witty correspondent and acclaimed novelist, as well as talented artist. Her works offer a vivid glimpse into the world of the 19th century.Emily travelled extensively across northern India in the 1830s. She was in the country accompanying her older brother, George Eden, while he served as the governor-general of India from 1836 to 1842. On her travels, she often painted portraits of eminent people, as well as their servants and attendants, offering a unique insight into the country in transition.
