One of the key topics in the recent Arsenal mailbag sent out to subscribers was, as you would expect, transfers.And one question in particular was from Geoff, who asked, “What does the perfect (realistic) transfer window look like? Who comes in, who leaves, key areas to address for Mikel Arteta’s squad.”Morgan Rogers? A right-back? A centre-forward? Keeping hold of certain players?There was a firm development on Wednesday, when Bruno Guimaraes told Newcastle United he wants to join Arsenal, who are stepping up their pursuit and have indicated a willingness to pay up to £60m for the midfielder, even if there have not yet been club-to-club talks and Newcastle maintain they will not entertain bids for him.We got three of our Arsenal writers together to gather their views on the window as a whole. Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.What should they do about the left-forward position?Art: There’s no doubt Arsenal still have room for improvement despite winning the Premier League. While official approaches have not been made for many of their targets, Arteta has acknowledged the need to build from a position of strength.Around four or five signings would be ideal. On the left wing, the dream would be to pursue Morgan Rogers and Bradley Barcola, both 23, as they bring different qualities to the role, but that could be tough financially. Last season Arsenal spent around £260million ($275m) on eight players, so spending similar on two would be unrealistic — even with a strong financial position. If I had to choose one, I’d flip a coin — they could be equally impressive in their differing styles.Nnamdi: So much has been made of Sir Alex Ferguson’s ruthless tendency to strengthen when at the top. For the first time in 22 years, Arsenal have the opportunity to do that.The priority position should be a left-forward, a player who can do what Bukayo Saka does on the right. The task of upgrading Leandro Trossard is much harder than it might appear. Besiktas have agreed a €20m (£17.1m; $22.9m) deal for Trossard, who is starring at this World Cup for Belgium.Trossard has been having a brilliant World Cup with Belgium (Christopher Morris/ISI Photos/ISI Photos via Getty Images)I would have kept Trossard and looked to move on Gabriel Martinelli, who has been a fantastic servant and fan favourite, but at 25, would have commanded a higher fee than Trossard, 31.I am not overly sold on Barcola and wouldn’t feel comfortable committing the sort of money that would be required to facilitate that deal. My choice for this position would be Rogers, who is Premier League-proven and more versatile, and would build on the squad’s British core.Kaya: Martinelli and Trossard had been competing for the left-wing spot for three years, but it’s time for a refresh. You could play Rogers there, but someone with real pace in behind, such as Barcola, would be fun.What about midfield?Kaya: Declan Rice will need a rest at some point. Arsenal were caught cold by not having good enough backup when Saka finally broke down a couple of years ago, and can’t risk it happening again.Myles Lewis-Skelly deserves a run and Mikel Merino and Martin Zubimendi are great options, but if Christian Norgaard leaves, you need another option. Newcastle captain Guimaraes feels like the best ‘ready now’ option to be linked, but I’m excited by the potential of Bournemouth 22-year-old Alex Scott.Art: As Kaya mentions, midfield does need attention because of the minutes Rice and Zubimendi played last season. It would be a difficult choice between Guimaraes and Scott, but I would maybe lean towards the experience of 28-year-old Guimaraes.Three midfield-related decisions should be to play Martin Odegaard deeper, re-integrate Ethan Nwaneri, and continue using Lewis-Skelly centrally.Do they still need a striker?Kaya: After all the talk around a centre forward last summer, the No 9 question still has not been convincingly answered.Viktor Gyokeres did OK in his debut season, and Kai Havertz is a great option when fit, but if Atletico Madrid and Argentina’s Julian Alvarez is available, they push for it. Gabriel Jesus, meanwhile, seems likely to leave.Art: It’s understandable if the centre-forward situation falls in Arsenal’s list of priorities. It will not be easy to recruit top-level players across all outfield areas, and they can use Merino in that position more often. My ideal signing in that position would be Eli Kroupi Junior. I like the 20-year-old’s playing style from his first season at Bournemouth — and it’s about time Arsenal signed a young Frenchman.Nnamdi: Due to Havertz’s injury issues last season, we didn’t get to see much of what him and Gyokeres alternating or simultaneously leading the line looked like. I would move on Jesus, but keep Havertz and Gyokeres.Arsenal still need more support for Havertz and Gyokeres (David Price/Arsenal FC via Getty Images)What about outgoings and other positions?Art: Move on Trossard and Martinelli to facilitate two newcomers in that position on the left. You lose an undeniable knack for coming up with big goals, but both players can be upgraded.Outside of Trossard, Martinelli and Ben White, it’s also time to say thanks for the memories to Jesus, Norgaard, Reiss Nelson and Fabio Vieira.Nnamdi: Arsenal should emphasise signing reliable understudies to help mitigate the injuries that key players, such as Odegaard, Saka, Rice and William Saliba, ended the season with. This is in addition to preventing the inevitable fitness issues that will come next season should there continue to be a lack of genuine rotation.The club can find a younger and more promising goalkeeper to replace Kepa Arrizabalaga as the No 2 (in addition to signing Illan Meslier on a free) and a player of a similar age profile to replace Norgaard in midfield. Lewis-Skelly has more than earned consideration for a starting place in central midfield.Is it time to replace Ben White?Nnamdi: White is a cult hero, but the amount of football he has played and the injuries he has suffered in recent campaigns seem to have taken their toll. A more durable right-back replacement to complement and share the load with Jurrien Timber would be welcome. Nelson and Vieira should also be moved on.Kaya: White has been a great servant at right back, but it did feel like there was a big drop-off when Timber wasn’t available. Refreshing with a younger option, such as 21-year-old Ivan Fresneda of Sporting CP, could work nicely.Art: If White is to leave, he should be replaced with someone who has a similar style, a defender who can contrast Timber. Givairo Read, the 20-year-old Feyenoord right-back, could be a younger, more cost-effective option.What is your favoured outcome for Nwaneri?Nnamdi: As much as it hurts to admit, Nwaneri’s departure would make sense, with others in front of him and academy players counting as pure profit in the finances. Another year of astronomical progress from Max Dowman should soften the blow.Kaya: Seeing as this is a ‘dream’ scenario, I’d love to see Nwaneri get a good loan move, rather than leave for good. Although the head says the smart thing to do is to sell permanently.Art: The ideal situation regarding Nwaneri is that he has a Lewis-Skelly-like resurgence in the first team, but if not, a beneficial loan would be next. I would not even fathom selling him.
