With over a month to go in the summer transfer window, the number of seismic deals that have already occurred would indicate that Premier League clubs are well on track to eclipse last year's record spend of £3billion.
While the majority of said deals have involved the league's elite, Arsenal have so far only added Christos Tzolis for £34million from Club Brugge with Illan Meslier, the former Leeds goalkeeper, also joining on a free transfer.
Strengthening a title-winning side is no mean feat and Arsenal have tried to be active. But the problem the Gunners have found is that they are trying to act rationally in a market which is now completely bereft of sanity.
Transfer fees have soared in recent years and are now well into obscene territory. And if the majority are moving with the tide rather than pushing against it, then that leaves others in a difficult spot.
