As the United States and its allies are confronting growing challenges from malign actors around the world, building a network of reliable partners has never been more important. Thus, the United States has a significant strategic interest in ensuring that the Eastern Mediterranean is a region of stability and prosperity. The region sits at the crossroads of Europe, the Middle East and Asia, making it essential for global energy markets, emerging trade corridors and efforts to strengthen supply chain resilience.
As co-chairs of the Congressional Hellenic Israel Alliance, we recognized this reality and years ago saw the potential for Greece, Israel and Cyprus to be key allies working with the United States to redefine the Eastern Mediterranean region. For decades, the Eastern Mediterranean was viewed primarily through the lens of conflict, unresolved disputes and geopolitical competition. Today, the region stands at the center of a different vision: one defined by energy security, economic connectivity, democratic partnerships, and greater regional cooperation. This transformation did not happen by accident. It is the result of sustained American leadership, bipartisan congressional engagement and the commitment of regional partners who recognized that cooperation, not confrontation, offers the best path forward.
