Bengaluru South City Corporation will take up a comprehensive study to assess whether to take up the construction of a skywalk or a grade separator at Banashankari junction. The skywalk project is currently under review as the authorities are mulling over a proposed grade separator aimed at easing traffic congestion at the junction. The decision to conduct the study was made at a meeting held by Bengaluru South City Corporation Commissioner K.N. Ramesh with officials from multiple departments to discuss the project’s future. The corporation had earlier proposed constructing a skywalk to improve pedestrian safety, and the groundbreaking ceremony for the project had already been held. However, the project was paused after Bengaluru Smart Infrastructure Limited (B-SMILE) proposed constructing a grade separator at the junction to address chronic traffic congestion. During the meeting, officials deliberated on the feasibility of implementing both projects without one affecting the other.Consultants and the chief engineer of the civic body said studies conducted by the corporation and the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) had found that a skywalk connecting all roads leading to the junction was essential for ensuring pedestrian safety. However, B-SMILE Technical Director B.S. Prahallad said he was not opposed to the construction of the skywalk but stressed that it should not hinder the possibility of building a flyover or underpass in the future. He said the heavy traffic volume at Banashankari junction warranted long-term planning and that the proposed skywalk should be designed in a way that accommodates a future grade separator. After hearing both sides, the commissioner directed officials to undertake a comprehensive assessment of the necessity, costs, feasibility, and advantages and disadvantages of both projects. He said a detailed report would be prepared and submitted to the higher authorities before a final decision is taken. Published - July 08, 2026 08:10 pm IST
