To get the Bengaluru traffic moving and ensure overall pedestrian safety, the city requires 25 new underpasses, 35 short flyovers, and 101 skywalks, along with nine other civic works, according to a recent comprehensive analysis by the Bengaluru Traffic Police (BTP).
In addition, the report identifies the need to clear waterlogging points, remove speed breakers, shift BMTC bus stops, install bus bays, improve junctions, enhance signage, and develop multi-level car parking systems.
A senior traffic police officer explained that the list has been prepared based on congestion data, accident hotspots, safety analysis, and predictive analysis using historical data. The list, therefore, includes both immediate requirements and long-term measures to ensure that gridlocks do not emerge in the future, especially as official data shows that nearly 2,000 vehicles are added to the city’s roads every day.
Flyovers and underpasses
Of the 35 proposed flyovers, 24 are required in East Bengaluru, particularly in the Whitefield and Mahadevapura areas, where vehicular traffic has increased over the years. These include stretches such as Varthur Kodi Junction, Dommasandra Circle, Hunjur KFC Junction, Siddapura Junction, and Muthanallur Cross.
