Greek exports recorded a significant increase in May thanks to the growth in fuel prices, leading to a reduction in the trade deficit, despite an increase in imports.

According to provisional data the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) released on Wednesday, the total value of exports amounted to €5.071 billion, from €4.195 billion in May 2025, recording an increase of 20.9%.

In the same period, the total value of imports amounted to €7.035 billion, compared to €6.524 billion in the same month last year, recording an increase of 7.8%.

As a result, the trade deficit was reduced to €1.964 billion, from €2.33 billion a year earlier, reduced by 15.7%.

Excluding fuel products, the increase in imports was marginal, just 0.2%, as their value amounted to €5.61 billion. In contrast, exports excluding petroleum products increased by 5.1%, to €3.41 billion. The trade deficit excluding fuel products fell by 6.5%, to €2.2 billion. Excluding fuel products and ships, the deficit decreased by 5.5%, to €2.15 billion.
