Brussels and Budapest remain at odds over supermarket pricing rules
The Commission has taken another step against Hungary’s controversial controls on food prices, referring Budapest to the EU’s top court over caps on supermarket markups.
The EU executive on Wednesday published its decision to sue Hungary over a decree imposing a 10% cap on supermarket profit margins for a range of food products, including chicken, milk, oil and sugar.
Viktor Orbán’s government adopted the rules in 2025, and his successor Péter Magyar has kept them in force with no end date in sight.
While the ruling Tisza party has distanced itself from Orbán’s economic model, several officials have cautioned against lifting the caps abruptly for fear of causing price spikes.
