Heavy rainfallThe India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast an active spell of monsoon across large parts of the country over the coming week, with widespread to heavy rainfall expected in several regions. The weather agency has also said conditions are favourable for the Southwest Monsoon to advance into the remaining parts of northwest India and cover the entire country within the next two to three days.According to the IMD's latest All India Weather Summary and Forecast Bulletin issued on Wednesday morning, the Southwest Monsoon has further advanced into more parts of the north Arabian Sea, the remaining parts of Gujarat, and additional areas of Rajasthan and Haryana. The Northern Limit of Monsoon currently passes through parts of Rajasthan and Haryana, but favourable atmospheric conditions are expected to allow the monsoon to cover the remaining parts of Rajasthan, Haryana and Punjab shortly, completing its advance across India.Heavy rain likely across north IndiaThe IMD has forecast fairly widespread to widespread rainfall over Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand during the next several days. Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are expected to witness widespread rain from July 8 to 14, while Jammu and Kashmir is likely to receive widespread rainfall until July 12.IMD weather bulletinPunjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi are expected to experience widespread rainfall on July 8 and 9, while western Uttar Pradesh is likely to receive widespread rain between July 8 and 10. Eastern Uttar Pradesh is expected to see widespread rainfall from July 11 to 13.Heavy rainfall has been forecast over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand from July 8 to 13. Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi may witness isolated heavy rain on July 8 and 9 and again on July 11 and 12. West Uttar Pradesh is likely to receive heavy rainfall between July 8 and 10, while East Uttar Pradesh could witness heavy rainfall on July 10 and July 13. The IMD has also warned of very heavy rainfall over East Uttar Pradesh on July 11 and 12.Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-60 kmph are also likely over parts of Rajasthan and Jammu and Kashmir during the next few days.Central India to witness intense monsoon activityCentral India is also expected to remain under the influence of active monsoon conditions. Widespread rainfall is forecast over West Madhya Pradesh during July 8 and 9, East Madhya Pradesh from July 8 to 11, and Vidarbha on July 8 and 9 as well as July 13.Very heavy rainfall is likely over East and West Madhya Pradesh during July 8 and 9, while isolated heavy rainfall is expected over East Madhya Pradesh between July 10 and 12. Vidarbha is also likely to receive isolated heavy rainfall on July 8.East and Northeast India remain under heavy rain watchThe IMD has issued one of its highest rainfall warnings for Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, where heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy rainfall is likely on July 8. The region is expected to continue receiving heavy rainfall through much of the forecast period.Bihar is also expected to witness heavy rainfall on July 8 and 11, while isolated very heavy rainfall is likely on July 10.Across the Northeast, widespread rainfall is expected over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya, as well as Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura over the coming week. Arunachal Pradesh may witness very heavy rainfall between July 8 and 10, while Assam and Meghalaya are likely to receive very heavy rain on July 8 and 9. Heavy rainfall is expected across most northeastern states during different periods over the next several days.Gujarat, Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra to receive very heavy rainfallWestern India is likely to remain one of the wettest regions during the current spell. Konkan and Goa are expected to receive widespread rainfall throughout the week, while Gujarat and Madhya Maharashtra are also likely to experience significant rainfall.The IMD has forecast isolated very heavy rainfall over Gujarat Region, Konkan and Goa, and Madhya Maharashtra on July 8. Heavy rainfall is also likely on July 9 across these regions.Saurashtra and Kutch are expected to receive isolated heavy rainfall, while thundersqualls with wind speeds reaching 50 to 70 kmph are likely over Gujarat during July 8 and 9.Heavy rain continues in southern statesIn southern India, widespread rainfall is expected over Coastal Karnataka throughout the forecast period, while Kerala and Mahe are likely to witness widespread rainfall between July 8 and 11.Heavy rainfall has been forecast over Kerala and North Interior Karnataka during July 8 and 9, Coastal Karnataka during July 9 and 10, and South Interior Karnataka on July 9. Coastal Karnataka and South Interior Karnataka may also receive isolated very heavy rainfall on July 8.Thunderstorms, lightning and strong surface winds are expected across Karnataka, Telangana, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, Kerala and Lakshadweep, with wind speeds reaching up to 60 kmph in some places.Flash flood risk in several statesThe IMD has warned of moderate flash flood risk over parts of Gujarat, Saurashtra and Kutch, West Madhya Pradesh, Madhya Maharashtra, Konkan and Goa, and Coastal Karnataka during the next 24 hours.A low to moderate flash flood risk has also been indicated for parts of Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya and Mizoram. The weather office warned that heavy rainfall over already saturated catchments could lead to rapid surface runoff, inundation of low-lying areas and localized flooding.With multiple weather systems remaining active and the monsoon strengthening across northern India, the IMD has advised residents in areas likely to receive heavy rainfall to remain alert for waterlogging, localized flooding, landslides in hilly terrain, traffic disruptions and reduced visibility. People have also been advised to follow local weather warnings and avoid venturing into flood-prone or landslide-prone areas during periods of intense rainfall.
