Seven days after the collapse of an apartment building in Athens’ Petralona district, a prosecutorial investigation into the cause remains stalled because debris still covers the area where the investigation will focus, and specifically parts of an adjacent plot where a new building was being erected.

The Athens First Instance Prosecutor’s Office has appointed two investigators to inspect the scene and prepare a technical report, but their work cannot begin while the site remains covered with rubble.

Seeking a solution, the prosecutor’s office chief, Aristidis Koreas, convened an emergency meeting with Athens Municipality and Attica Regional Authority representatives. According to reports, the two bodies have yet to determine which is responsible for clearing the debris.

Prosecutorial sources described the situation as an emergency. Personal belongings remain at the site, public health concerns are being examined and a resident has reported a missing pet dog.
