This marks the fourth time in five World Cups that the USMNT has been eliminated at the round of 16 since the tournament’s modern era began in 1998.
The US looked genuinely dangerous in group play, including a convincing 4-1 victory over Paraguay. Then Belgium happened. The same scoreline, just in reverse. Pochettino himself acknowledged the collapse in intensity, noting that the team needs to examine why the sharpness from the group stage evaporated when it mattered most.
Pochettino’s future and the evaluation period
Pochettino was appointed head coach in September 2024 with significant supporter backing. His contract was structured to run through the 2026 World Cup cycle, which means the current deal has technically reached its natural endpoint.
