The U.S. men's national team has been eliminated from the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a 4-1 loss to Belgium in the round of 16 on Monday, July 6 at Lumen Field in Seattle.Mauricio Pochettino named an unchanged starting lineup after Folarin Balogun's suspension was suspended by FIFA and allowed to play.Belgium got on the front foot at the opening whistle and piled on the pressure early leading to the opening goal by Charles De Ketelaere in the ninth minute. A failure to clear the ball from their own box led to a simple tap-in for the first goal of the match.Malik Tillman got the U.S. level just after the half-hour mark with his second free-kick goal of the tournament. However, just two minutes later, the Red Devils retook the lead through another goal from De Ketelaere.Coming out of the halftime break, the Americans built some momentum towards an equalizer and buzzing around the opposing goal. However, a disastrous error from goalkeeper Matt Freese gifted Belgium a third goal that effectively killed off the match. Romelu Lukaku added a fourth goal in stoppage time to end the USA's run at their home World Cup.Let's take a look at how the U.S. players performed in the loss:USMNT player ratingsGK: Matt Freese - 3A catastrophic mistake that ruined the team's second half momentum and effectively blew any chance at a comeback.RWB: Sergiño Dest - 3.5Nothing he attempted came off as he looked nervous and was unable to help the team going forward. He was pulled at halftime due to his poor performance.RCB: Alex Freeman - 5Several questionable moments in the buildup play and in possession. Defensively he didn't make any glaring mistakes.CCB: Chris Richards - 4.5He was beaten over the top a few times and gave up possession to Lukaku on the last-minute goal.LCB: Tim Ream - 3.5Got dunked on by De Ketelaere on the second goal and failed to clear a shanked shot on Freese's gaffe.LWB: Antonee Robinson - 5His side of the field enjoyed the few successful forays forward. He was able to add some width and options on the few chances there were to attack.CM: Tyler Adams - 5Adams was unable to provide the energetic spark in the midfield as he usually does. The whole midfield was overrun as a result.CM: Malik Tillman - 7The only USMNT player on the field that didn't look scared or that the occasion was too big for them. Sure, he got a lucky deflection on his free-kick goal, but he was still crisp in possession and the only attacking player full of ideas.RAM: Weston McKennie - 4An extremely poor first half, in which he looked nervous and continuously tried to play unsuccessful first-time passes under no pressure. Just a forgettable ending to a magnificent tournament for him individually.LAM: Christian Pulisic - 4.5In the biggest match of the tournament, the U.S. needed its best player to step up. Instead, Pulisic was a complete non-factor and limped off with another injury early in the second half.ST: Folarin Balogun - 5He was lively and making great runs when the chance presented. His hold-up play was also a plus. A missed chance late in the first half was a huge moment that ended up costing the team in the end.Sub: Gio Reyna - 5.5Added a bit of spark and creativity after coming on at halftime. He seemed to be leading the resurgence before the Freese error sucked all momentum out of the stadium.Sub: Sebastian Berhalter - 5Came the closest to finding a second goal. He may not be the cleanest or most talented player on the ball, but he provides energy whenever he steps on the field.Sub: Ricardo Pepi - 5Really didn't affect the team after coming on. He seemed to be a makeshift winger/withdrawn forward and it didn't work.Sub: Haji Wright - NR90th minute sub.Sub: Max Arfsten - NR90th minute sub.
