COMMUNITY leaders in Shallcross and Bayview have voiced concern over the large number of immigrants who “surfaced out of nowhere” in recent days, as they sought refuge from protesters.
They claimed the informal settlements were harbouring illegal immigrants by renting them shacks, putting a strain on essential services and infrastructure.
“During and after the March and March protests, those once living in harmony with the immigrants turned on them and demanded that they leave or they would be assaulted,” claimed Brandon Pillay, a community leader in Bayview.
“We have to admit, we had a large number of immigrants Bayview, many of them left before the June 30 deadline. In June, a group of immigrants approached us for assistance. We had a list of about 300 Malawians and we contacted the Department of Home Affairs. At the time they were taken to Sherwood,” he said.
