A peaceful protest along Lenny Naidu Road in Chatsworth last week culminated in the official handover of an urgent memorandum to the mayor's office and senior police officials, as about 100 Bayview residents took to the streets to demand the immediate shutdown of illegal scrapyards.
Under the banner of local non-profit organisation Bayview Community Assist (BCA), the community marched in protest against the operation of ilegal scrap metal yards, rampant infrastructure theft, environmental hazards, and escalating criminal activity taking place within the neighbourhood.
Bayview SAPS Station Commander Lieutenant Colonel Shenlatha Raghoonundan was present at the handover of the memorandum at the end of the march, acknowledging the community's frustration and promising immediate intervention.
"I wish to assure the community that the concerns raised by the public are being taken very seriously," Raghoonundan said.
"We intend working closely with all relevant role players, including the municipality and the Office of the Mayor, to address the problem at hand."
