Efforts were on to obtain the globally-recognised Blue Flag by creating visitor-friendly amenities at the scenic Sothavilai Beach in the district, which has been attracting a huge number of tourists everyday, District Collector M. Prathap has said.After inspecting the picturesque Sothavilai Beach under Puthalam town panchayat on Tuesday, Mr. Prathap said the beautiful Beach, attracting large number of visitors everyday, would be provided with tourist-friendly facilities on an outlay of ₹1 crore. The amount had been allocated in the 2024 – 2025 Budget. Since Blue Flag certification had been given to the tourist-friendly beaches like Marina and Mamallapuram Beaches, steps had been initiated for obtaining this recognition for Sothavilai Beach also by ensuring more cleanliness and through creating better environmental conditions, the Collector said.He also inspected the Sanguthurai Beach in nearby Rajakkalmangalam village panchayat, where the Block Development Officer was instructed to create drinking water, sanitary complex and street light facilities in the beach, which is also drawing huge crowd everyday, especially during weekends.“A comprehensive project report on the facilities to be created in these two beaches should be prepared and submitted to the Minister for Tourism S. Rajesh Kumar for getting funds at the earliest,” Mr. Prathap told the officials.After visiting the beaches, the Collector inspected the development projects, including construction of additional classroom buildings being implemented in Panikankudiyirupu under Puthalam town panchayat and visited the ration shop in the same area, where he checked the stocks of essential commodities.The Collector inspected the construction of badminton court at Annai Nagar in Pallamthurai village panchayat, which is being created on an outlay of ₹25 lakh under the MP’s Constituency Development Fund.At Kesavanputhanthurai, Mr. Prathap inspected the ongoing construction of the primary health centre at the cost of ₹45 lakh, road laying work between Aathikattuvilai and Thamaraikuttivilai on an outlay of ₹39.36 lakh.
