AmaQadi Traditional Authority leader Inkosi Mqoqi Ngcobo receives the keys to his new vehicle from KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Thulasizwe Buthelezi during a handover ceremony in Durban.

The move to allocate more top of the range SUV vehicles to amakhosi has sparked a rift among key parties in the Government of Provincial Unity in the KwaZulu-Natal legislature.

The DA and the IFP in the legislature are at loggerheads over the allocation of more vehicles to amakhosi.

About 30 amakhosi have already been allocated cars, and more are to receive vehicles. It is expected that all 300 amakhosi in the province will receive vehicles.

The vehicles have been allocated by the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA). The CoGTA MEC Thulasizwe Buthelezi is from the IFP, while the committee that oversees the department is chaired by the DA.
