Netflix’s acclaimed social-issues drama Adolescence is rumoured to be making a major cast addition for its second season: Oscar-winning actor Kate Winslet.Winslet, who won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in the 2008 drama The Reader, is tipped to front a new storyline, with the series currently in early development.The first season of Adolescence, released on the streaming service last year, followed the aftermath of teenage girl’s murder, and explores issues surrounding the “manosphere” and toxic masculinity. Renowned for its choice to shoot each episode in a single take, the four-episode series won a raft of industry awards, including nine Emmys.A report in the MailOnline claimed that Winslet has been in talks to star in the follow-up series, with a source telling the publication: “It's happening and in development. There's excitement that Kate's on board.”Kate Winslet photographed in January 2026 (Getty Images)The Independent has contacted a representative of Winslet for comment.Actor Stephen Graham, who played the father of Jamie (Owen Cooper), the 13-year-old accused of stabbing his classmate, has previously discussed the possibility of a second season.Speaking to reporters after winning the award for Best Actor at the Golden Globes in January, Graham said: “It's somewhere in the deep recesses of my mind and [Adolescence writer Jack Thorne’s] mind.“We'll pull it out in three or four years, so stay tuned.”With the story of the first Adolescence series having wrapped up at the end of its initial run, any new installment is expected to focus on new characters, while exploring similar themes – the dark sides of teenage life in the 21st century.For Winslet, Adolescence may well represent a return to themes she previously explored in the 2022 Channel 4 drama I Am Ruth.The standalone TV film co-starred Winslet’s real-life daughter, The Phoenician Scheme actor Mia Threapleton, as a teenage girl whose mental health deteriorates as a result of social media. This revenue helps to fund journalism across The Independent.Owen Cooper filming ‘Adolescence (Netflix)Speaking to The Independent and other press at the time, Winslet stated that she wanted to tell a story “about our time” and “create an avenue for conversation”. “I’ve been a parent to teenagers and have been on the periphery of friends raising teenagers who have gone through some absolutely horrific things,” she said. “A lot of the things you hear in the film are direct from things that friends have said to me. “There’s the scene when Ruth sits on the bed and says, ‘I don’t know who I am, I’m really struggling, I don’t like myself, I don’t look forward to anything.’ That’s literally a conversation I had with a very close friend a couple of years ago.” The first season of Adolescence is available to stream now on Netflix.
