Sir, – Sarah Moss perfectly captures an experience far too familiar to anyone daring to cycle in Ireland (“‘You just nearly killed me and we’re both lucky I’m wearing a helmet,’ I told the SUV driver”, Weekend, July 6th). I too experience a near-death incident once or twice a year while cycling due to driver behaviour.As Moss points out, this has a lot to do with official messaging in Ireland that implicitly places people in cars (and the vehicles themselves) above everyone else, be it pedestrians or cyclists.This was perfectly reflected in the image accompanying Moss’s article: a car apparently parked (illegally) on the footpath, normalising the idea that in Ireland, cars are the dominate beings, and everyone else should get out of the way. – Yours, etc, OLA LØKKEN NORDRUM, Dublin 4.
