Karate SA has a long history of turbulence, with infighting and legal battles dogging the federation for more than a decade under long-serving president Sonny Pillay.

THE World Karate Federation has provisionally suspended Karate SA's national executive and appointed an interim board, citing governance issues and pending disciplinary proceedings.

The world body announced the decision in a letter at the end of June, signed by its president Antonio Espinós, citing a report by two senior officials it sent to investigate the state of karate in South Africa, IOL which has seen the letter, reported.

The office of sports, arts and culture minister Gayton McKenzie, who was copied on the letter, did not respond to IOL's request for comment.

The WKF is the world governing body for karate and the only karate federation recognised by the International Olympic Committee.
