Fearing for the health and safety of the aging professor, the association demanded that the authorities grant him immediate access to his family, legal team, and medical care.
The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Enugu State Branch, has raised concerns over the controversial arrest of renowned cardiothoracic surgeon, Emeritus Professor Martin A.C. Aghaji.
SaharaReporters gathered that Aghaji was taken from his residence by security operatives in the early hours of Friday, July 3, 2026.
In an emergency communiqué obtained by SaharaReporters on Sunday, issued after a critical meeting of its State Officers' Council (SOC), the NMA said that nearly 48 hours after the operation, security agencies had yet to officially disclose the reasons for the high-profile arrest.
The association condemned what it described as the Gestapo-like manner in which the elder statesman was arrested and demanded his immediate release or arraignment in accordance with due process.
