Australia has provided an additional $19.2 million in budget support to the Government of Samoa to help ease pressure on public finances caused by rising fuel costs.

Australian High Commissioner William Robinson said Samoa, Australia and other Pacific countries were all feeling the effects of changes in global fuel supply, which have placed added pressure on households and governments.

"Samoa, like Australia and many Pacific countries, is hurting from a shock to fuel supply," Robinson said.

"We understand that this puts a strain on families and communities, whether it is a family shopping at the Fugalei Market or on the national finances. We know increases in fuel prices can leave a hole in the budget, and we want you to know that Australia stands with Samoa during this tough time."

Robinson said the additional funding would help the government maintain essential public services.
