The World Bank executive welcomed the EU's focus on strengthening local health systems
The EU’s new global health plans are helping move the world away from an overly reactive approach to epidemics and other health emergencies, said the head of a pandemic financing hub.
Priya Basu, executive head of the World Bank’s Pandemic Fund, told Euractiv at last week’s Global Health Policy Forum in Brussels that she welcomed the EU’s support for low-income countries in strengthening health systems and vaccine supply chains.
Its new plans mark “a shift away from outdated modalities that foster aid dependency toward a country-led, sovereign health model,” she said.
In May, the European Commission unveiled its new Global Health Resilience Initiative, aimed at tackling disinformation and building “health sovereignty.”
