Hundreds of suburban commuters faced severe hardships on Sunday after Southern Railway cancelled 41 suburban train services from Beach to Tambaram and Chengalpattu. The train services were cancelled for undertaking engineering works as part of safety measures. While the Chennai division operated special trains to compensate for the cancelled services from 10.30 a.m. to 3.30 p.m., the trains were operated only between Tambaram and Chengalpattu, resulting in heavy crowds waiting in several railway stations including Park, Egmore, Fort, and Mambalam. The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) also operated 50 additional bus services from Tambaram to various destinations.S. Vikram, a resident of Palavanthangal, said that suburban trains are already crowded on Sundays due to reduced schedules. The five-hour service cancellation forces outstation travellers, as well as passengers proceeding to the Dr. MGR Chennai Central station, to depend on commercial vehicles.
