Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry is backing the project with up to ¥500 billion in support.

The expansion will help Micron improve power efficiency and chip performance used for AI services and self‑driving vehicles. The factory already benefits from Japan’s strong ecosystem in chip materials and equipment, as about 80% of the materials Micron needs are sourced domestically.

Japan Steps In as a Major Backer for Micron’s AI Chip Plans

Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra highlighted Hiroshima’s importance to the company’s AI roadmap, noting that Micron’s first HBM production wafer was made at the site.

Importantly, Japan is now a key partner for Micron. The government has set aside about ¥775 billion in total support for the company, as it sees advanced memory as important for national security and future growth. Economy Minister Ryosei Akazawa said Japan is ready to support other global chipmakers as well, reflecting its push to rebuild its chip industry.
