LOS ANGELES — When his first All-Star appearance was made official, and Dave Roberts presented him with the recognition, Andy Pages’ first thought was to reach out to his parents. The Los Angeles Dodgers center fielder and National League starting outfielder thumbed out a message to his parents to let them know the news and pressed send.As of Saturday afternoon, the message has not shown as delivered on WhatsApp.“I don’t know if they know, but at some point I think that someone will tell them or they’ll see it somewhere,” Pages said in Spanish.Pages has spent much of his breakout season with the Dodgers cut off from communication with his parents and sister in the Cuban town of Mantua. Tension between the United States and Cuba has resulted in a power crisis in Pages’ home country, coupling an aging power grid with sanctions from the U.S. that have made it difficult to generate the fuel Cuba needs. So Pages’ family — including his father, Liban, a carpenter who carved out bats for Pages — has seen him play in the big leagues only in the sparse highlights they can find.Communication has often played out like on Saturday. Sometimes, they can connect and get enough power. More often, Pages reaches out and has to wait to hear back. He already has an idea of what they would say.“In this moment, I think they’d feel really happy,” Pages said. “They’re going to be really proud of me, of all the work that I’ve done since I was a kid. For my part, I’m going to feel very proud to give that satisfaction to them with that happiness.”
