The India Meteorological Department has maintained a Red Alert for Mumbai and Thane for July 4, 5, and 6, with the administration declaring a holiday for schools and colleges in Thane district and the Kalyan-Dombivli municipal area for today (July 4, 2026). Emergency helplines have been activated across the region.

For July 5 and 6, the Red Alert continues for these coastal districts. The forecast indicates heavy to extremely heavy rainfall at several places in these areas. For the ghat sections of Pune, Satara, and Nashik, heavy rainfall has been predicted.The IMD has also stated that North Konkan districts will receive heavy to very heavy rainfall at some locations, while South Konkan-Goa will see similar conditions. Central Maharashtra ghat areas and Marathwada districts are expected to experience thunderstorms with lightning and winds at 40-50 kmph, with isolated heavy rainfall at some places.In Thane district, the administration has declared a holiday for all schools and colleges on Saturday (July 4, 2025). The Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation’s education department issued a circular on Friday evening. Bharat Bornare, the Administrative Officer, confirmed that the holiday applies to all institutions under the Maharashtra State Board, CBSE, ICSE, and CIE boards within the municipal limits. The Thane district administration has also declared a holiday for all schools, colleges, and anganwadis in Palghar district for Saturday and Sunday, given the Red Alert. For Thane district, the Kalyan-Dombivli municipal area has specifically announced a holiday for Saturday, July 4, considering the Red Alert on that day and the Yellow Alert for July 5.The administration has taken this decision based on the rainfall that has occurred over the past three days. In Kalyan and Dombivli, water entered residential areas in various parts. On the Kalyan-Shilphata road, water accumulation led to traffic congestion, and students in school buses remained stuck for one to one and a half hours. The Mharal and Kamba areas, located near the city’s entrance, have low-lying roads that experience waterlogging regularly. When the Ulhas River rises, water enters these low-lying areas, causing flood-like conditions. The municipal administration has stated that schools and colleges must take measures to ensure the safety of students, teachers, and non-teaching staff during the rainfall period. The State government has directed local bodies to make decisions based on the situation.For Mumbai, the BMC has not declared a blanket holiday for all schools, but the civic body has issued advisories for citizens to step out only for essential work. The city recorded 37 mm of rainfall at Colaba between 8:30 A.M. and 5:30 P.M. today. Navi Mumbai’s Matheran area recorded 30 mm during the same period. The BMC has activated its helpline number 1916 for emergency assistance.In Thane, the municipal corporation has provided multiple helpline numbers: 022-25364779, 022-25301740, and +91 93723 38827. The Thane district disaster management cell has set up a toll-free number 1800-222-108 and a mobile number 8657887101 for emergency calls. The Palghar district control room can be reached at 02525-297474 and +91 82379 78873. Panvel Municipal Corporation has activated 022-27458040, 41, and 42.The administration has urged citizens in Mumbai and Thane to remain cautious. People have been advised to stay indoors unless necessary. The control rooms of all municipal corporations and disaster management cells are operating 24 hours.
