The India Meteorological Department extended the red alert for Mumbai, Thane and Palghar until 7 p.m. on Wednesday (July 1, 2026), with a nowcast warning of heavy rain in isolated places valid for three hours from 12.30 p.m.. Heavy rainfall across the region disrupted road traffic, caused waterlogging in low-lying areas, and led to a tree fall in Andheri. In Palghar, the district administration declared a holiday for all schools, colleges and anganwadis on July 2. Separately, two college students were electrocuted in Nerul, Navi Mumbai, after water came in contact with a live wire.Monsoon tracker LIVEThe weather department issued a nowcast warning at 12.30 p.m. with a red alert for Thane, Mumbai and Palghar districts. Raigad and Ratnagiri were later placed under red alert, while Sindhudurg, Pune, Satara, Kolhapur and Palghar remained under orange alert. The IMD urged residents to avoid travel and remain cautious.According to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data, multiple locations recorded over 100 mm of rainfall between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.. Powai recorded 118.4 mm at the Paspoli Powai Municipal School, followed by 117.4 mm at Tagore Nagar Municipal School in Vikhroli and 115.8 mm at Vikhroli Fire Station. The MCMCR in Powai recorded 114 mm, Andheri Fire Station 116.4 mm, and Cooper Hospital 110.8 mm. Malpa Dongari Municipal School in Andheri and K East Ward Office recorded 112.4 mm and 107.2 mm respectively.Razor’s edge: On the progress of the southwest monsoonWaterlogging was reported in Worli, parts of Navi Mumbai, and the Andheri subway. Powai Lake began overflowing around 5.30 a.m.; the lake has a storage capacity of 545 crore litres and supplies water for industrial use. A tree fell on Swami Vivekananda Road in Andheri, disrupting traffic; fire tenders and BMC teams cleared the road with mechanised equipment. The Western Express Highway in Santacruz East saw a traffic jam during peak hours. The city’s seven reservoirs held 7.18% of total capacity at 6 a.m. on Wednesday (July 1, 2026), compared to 41.17% on July 1, 2025.In Palghar, district collector Dr. Indu Rani Jakhar issued an order on Wednesday (July 1, 2026) declaring a holiday for all anganwadis, government and private primary and secondary schools, zilla parishad schools, colleges, and vocational training centres on Thursday (July 2, 2026). The order cited the heavy rain alert and the possibility of waterlogging in low-lying areas. The administration appealed to parents to keep children safe and advised residents to avoid stepping out unless necessary.In Navi Mumbai, an incident of electrocution was reported near the LP bridge in Nerul. Two college students received electric shocks after water on the road came in contact with a live wire, possibly due to a short circuit caused by continuous rain. The students fell on the road and were rescued by bystanders, who took them to a nearby hospital. They are under treatment. Navi Mumbai Mayor Sujata Patil visited the spot and conducted an inspection. She said officials have been directed to ensure waterlogging does not occur and that no houses are flooded. She noted that waterlogging has occurred at some places due to negligence and stated that an inquiry has been initiated to determine responsibility for the electrocution.
