Storage in India’s 166 major reservoirs continues to be worrisome, with the water level in two of three dams below 40 per cent of the 183.565 billion cubic metres (BCM) capacity this week, data from the Central Water Commission (CWC) showed.CWC’s weekly statistics on the major reservoirs showed that they were filleld to 26 per cent of the capacity at 47.725 BCM. The situation has been aggravated by a deficient south-west monsoon, which was 33 per cent below normal as of July 2.According to India Meteorological Department, the monsoon will be active for another week and cover the entire country. This offers some hope in storage improving. We give a graphic account of the reservoirs situation below.Published on July 3, 2026
