Fernando da Cruz has officially started his two-year tenure as Kaizer Chiefs head coach.
Fernando da Cruz has finally assumed his head coaching duties at Kaizer Chiefs. Whether that will help the team hit the ground running next season remains to be seen. However, his appointment could bring a mix of continuity and the risk of tactical stagnation.
Da Cruz initially arrived at Chiefs at this time of year two years ago as one of Nasreddine Nabi’s assistants. However, he resigned barely two months into the job to take up a role at the Moroccan Football Federation.
As such, his familiarity with the Amakhosi base, Taung Village, was evident when he arrived this week. Smiling from ear to ear, he shared a warm moment with sporting director Kaizer Motaung Junior, who introduced him to the players.
“I would like to introduce coach Fernando. Normally, I would say welcome, but this is ‘welcome home, coach. You are coming back’. A lot of the faces that are here are very familiar to you,” Motaung Junior said.
