German chemicals firm Wacker is entering the data center cooling market.Wacker has announced Helisol EC, a new silicon-based dielectric fluid for immersion-cooled infrastructure.Wacker currently produces Helios heat transfer fluids for industrial applications, and has created a new variant it is pitching for use in single-phase immersion deployments.Helisol fluids are poly-dimethylsiloxanes, made from a mixture of linear siloxane compounds, which it says are stable and able to work in a variety of temperatures. Wacker said the fluid’s operating temperature range extends from -100 to +100 degrees Celsius.Wacker says its silicon-based fluid is less harmful than Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), which have traditionally been used for many dielectric fluids in immersion environments, and are known to cause cancer. PFAS-based fluids are, however, generally being phased out in favor of other coolants.Wacker Chemie was founded in Germany around 1914. Today, the firm focuses on silicon chemistry and ethylene-based polymer products.Controlled by the Wacker family, the firm operates more than 25 production sites in Europe, Asia, and the Americas, producing the likes of silicone rubbers, polymer products such as ethylene vinyl acetate redispersible polymer powder, chemical materials, polysilicon, and wafers for the semiconductor industry.Most of Wacker’s Helisol fluids are manufactured at the firm’s production site in Burghausen, Germany.
