The Tamil Nadu government has issued orders for the further acquisition of 7.44 acres of land to facilitate the proposed expansion of Coimbatore International Airport.Sources in the know of the development said that a Government Order was issued on Thursday (July 2, 2026) and the 7.44 acres is meant to connect a 200-feet road from the proposed new airport terminal with the L&T Bypass of Salem - Kochi Highway. This parcel of land is in addition to the 600-odd acres initially earmarked for the airport expansion.The State government has so far acquired and handed over 621.58 acres to the Airport Authority of India (AAI), which started compound wall construction and other works. Sources said that the additional 7.44 acres for the road work will be acquired using the balance from the ₹2,100 crore that had been allocated by the State government for the land acquisition.The 7.44 acres of land identified for the road work do not have buildings or trees. The AAI, which is aware of the allocation of additional parcel of land, has reportedly requested the district administration to expedite the acquisition at the earliest for further works to be carried out.Sources added that the State government is yet to issue a Government Order to hand over 10 acres of poramboke land within the acquisition area. In addition, acquisition of 1.36 acres of patta land is pending due to legal disputes. Meanwhile, Union Minister of Civil Aviation Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu on Thursday reviewed the elevation designs and construction progress of key airport projects, including Coimbatore.“Indian airports are being recognised globally for architecture that goes beyond terminals - blending technology, sustainability and the rich cultural heritage of our nation,” he posted on X.
