The land acquisition to improve the ‘S’ bend junction on Vilankurichi Road has received approval, paving the way for the implementation of a long-pending traffic improvement project in Coimbatore.According to a senior official of the Coimbatore Corporation, the District Collector, through proceedings dated March 13, 2026, directed the Revenue Department to acquire land for the project. To facilitate the project, 39.73 cents of land will be acquired. The acquisition involves the removal of 22 houses located along the proposed alignment. The Corporation has allocated ₹50 lakh for the construction of a traffic island, taking the total project cost to ₹6.54 crore. The junction is located at the intersection of Vilankurichi Road, Thanneerpandal Road, CODISSIA Road and Gandhi Maa Nagar Road. The roads serve as major commercial corridors and witness substantial vehicular movement throughout the day. The presence of several warehouses in the area results in frequent movement of heavy vehicles, leading to congestion and delays at the junction.Officials said the project involves widening the road and carrying out geometric improvements to streamline traffic flow and improve road safety. The stretch has long been identified as a bottleneck, particularly during peak hours.A senior Town Planning official said the corporation would construct a roundabout at the junction after the completion of the land acquisition. The proposed improvements are expected to ease traffic and enhance connectivity in the eastern parts of the city. Published - June 03, 2026 08:13 pm IST
