DA MP Dean Macpherson said the launch of the National Built Environment and Construction Safety Framework was an important step towards strengthening safety, accountability and collaboration across the built environment ecosystem.

Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Dean Macpherson on Friday launched a framework aimed at addressing the collapse of buildings after a spate of incidents was experienced in the past two years.

Addressing the second Public Works and Infrastructure Summit, hosted by the Council for the Built Environment, in Johannesburg, Macpherson said the launch took place against the backdrop of a number of building collapses that have shaken South Africa.

He was referring to the incidents in George in the Western Cape, Redcliffe in northern Durban, and Ormonde in Johannesburg.

The incidents raised difficult questions about construction quality, regulatory oversight, professional accountability, enforcement, and state capability.
