Netflix's new true crime documentary explores the mysterious disappearance of an elderly and reclusive man.13:49, 03 Jul 2026Netflix's Worst Neighbor Ever solves the mystery of how a 70-year-old Charles Wilding suddenly disappeared.Fans of true crime are urged to watch an eye-opening four-part Netflix documentary series, Worst Neighbor Ever, which focuses on how four different neighbours made residents' lives a living hell.Episode 4, titled The Executor, features two storylines as it follows hellish neighbour Caroline Herrling, while also investigating the disappearance of a man named Charles Wilding.Viewers learn that the two stories become interlinked when, in October 2021, Detective Mark O’Donnell of the LAPD received an anonymous tip about 70-year-old Charles Wilding, a wealthy single homeowner in Sherman Oaks with no family. The caller was worried Charles was likely dead and his identity was being fraudulently used for financial gain.O’Donnell’s investigation of the potential homicide case lead him to Caroline Herrling, a 'litigation consultant' who claimed she was in charge of Wilding’s estate. But after hitting a dead end, O’Donnell began to investigate Herrling as a suspect. What happened to Charles Wilding?Throughout the episode, viewers learned how Herrling had initially moved into a complex of townhouses known as Beverly Glen. She was pleasant at first, but over time, her neighbours noticed suspicious behaviour such as packages going missing, strange noises in the night, drug abuse and skittish behaviour.Herrling was eventually evicted after it transpired she was not paying rent, and she ended up moving into a property in West Hills, which she was running as a "sober living facility". It transpired that, after fraudulently stating she was Charles' trustee, she had stolen and used his money to buy the home. While they had identified Herrling was definitely involved in Charles' disappearance, the detectives still had no idea what had happened to him, with Herrling continuing to state he was alive and had been staying elsewhere with friends.Towards the end of the episode, detectives came across career criminal, Jason Kroth, who was a co-account holder with Herrling on one of the bank accounts containing Charles' money. The ex-con and drug dealer, who was in a romantic relationship with Herrling, was called in for a police interview and it was then he admitted he had broken into Charles' home to see what he could steal, not knowing what he was about to find.He had discovered Charles' dead body laying on the ground and it was clear Charles had been dead for some time, with no one interested in finding him.Kroth said he had called Herrling, who had driven to Charles' house to collect his body and drive it back to her Beverly Glen apartment.Herrling eventually confessed to attempting to dissolve his remains in a tub of acid, but it did not work completely, so she ended up dismembering the body. She then took them to San Francisco Bay to dispose of them in the sea.On March 15, 2024, Herrling admitted one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and she was sentenced to 20 years in prison.Article continues belowKroth also admitted to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and possession with intent to distribute meth, and was sentenced to 16 years and eight months in prison.Worst Neighbor Ever is on Netflix
