Netflix's new documentary Worst Neighbor Ever includes a disturbing missing person case.11:03, 04 Jul 2026Netflix's new true crime documentary includes an eye-opening story of deception.Streaming giant Netflix's new true crime documentary series, Worst Neighbor Ever, tells the story of for neighbours who made residents' lives a living nightmare.Episode four, titled The Executor, weaves two storylines as it follows 'litigation consultant' Caroline Herrling, while also investigating the disappearance of a man named Charles Wilding. In October 2021, Detective Mark O’Donnell of the LAPD received an anonymous tip about 70-year-old Charles, a wealthy single homeowner in Sherman Oaks with no family. The caller was worried Charles was likely dead and his identity was being fraudulently used for financial gain.O’Donnell’s investigation of the potential homicide case lead him to Caroline Herrling, who claimed she was in charge of Wilding’s estate, but O’Donnell began to grow suspicious of her. What did Caroline Herrling do?Herrling had made a habit out of looking for properties in affluent neighbourhoods that appeared unkempt, with a view to take advantage of the owners and even take possessions for themselves. In 2020, her partner, career criminal Jason Kroth, came across a home in Sherman Oaks, belonging to Charles, and broke in only to find Charles already dead. While his body continued to decompose, Herrling and her friends took over the property and looted his assets. She used a forged power-of-attorney form so she could pretend to act on Charles' behalf while stealing his financial accounts.Herrling told police she was a "close friend" of Charles and his family, as well as the trustee of his family trust. With police demanding to know where Charles was, she told them he had gone to Carpinteria to stay with friends while she was working to get the house back in order, as it was in disarray. She executed an elaborate plan to ensure his body would never be found and he would be presumed to be alive and well, recruiting someone to pose as Charles.Meanwhile, Herrling and her co-conspirators moved Charles' body to her apartment, where they tried to dissolve it a tub of acid. When that didn't work, they dismembered the body and dumped the remains in the sea at San Francisco Bay.Herrling had used Charles' money to buy a home after she was evicted from her apartment for not paying rent.Where is Caroline Herrling now?On March 15, 2024, Herrling admitted one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and she was sentenced to 20 years in prison. She also had to pay $3.8million in restitution to her victims. As for where she is now, she is still serving her prison sentence.Kroth also admitted to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and possession with intent to distribute meth, and was sentenced to 16 years and eight months in prison, having to pay out $1.9million.US Attorney Martin Estrada had said upon Herrling's conviction as quoted by ABC7 News: "This defendant's misconduct was both greedy and grotesque, causing profound pain to the victims and their loved ones."There must be serious consequences for those who prey on vulnerable communities, such as older adults, and my office will remain steadfast in bringing these offenders to justice."Article continues belowWorst Neighbor Ever is on Netflix
