The boss of the UK Port of Dover has warned of 'cars spilling out of the port for miles' this summer, due to delays over the busy summer travel period linked to the EU's new EES passport checks.
As the peak summer travel period gets underway there have been several warnings about delays linked to the EU's new Entry & Exit System of passport checks, and as expected the UK Port of Dover is set to be among the worst hit.
While France's airports have, so far, not seen as many EES-related problems as those in Italy and Spain, there have long been concerns about the cross-Channel ferry port of Dover.
Chief executive Doug Banister this week warned that it will “face repeated episodes of severe congestion” throughout the summer without more flexibility in EES.
He told The Independent that queuing cars will be “spilling out of the port onto the public highway for miles” unless something changes, adding “the local impact could be dire”.
