Alpine is giving us our first proper look at the future of one of the world’s best-loved sports cars at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, with a new development car called the A110 FUTURE.The rather shouty name has been chosen because this is the car being used to shape the next-generation Alpine A110 – and, yes, that means the next A110 will be fully electric.Alpine says the new A110 will be “the world’s first true EV sportscar”, which is a bold claim in a world where electric performance cars are hardly thin on the ground. But the French brand is clearly keen to make sure its next sports car still feels like an Alpine, rather than just another very fast EV with a famous badge on the nose.Alpine says the new A110 will be “the world’s first true EV sportscar” (Alpine)The A110 FUTURE will make its public debut at Goodwood from 9-12 July, running every day across the four-day festival. It will be the centrepiece of what Alpine says is its biggest ever presence at the event.Underneath the development car is Alpine’s new Alpine Performance Platform, or APP, which has been designed specifically for electric sports cars. The company says it has been engineered to keep the light, agile feel the A110 is known for, while also outperforming today’s best petrol sports cars. The technical bits sound promising, even if Alpine is keeping the full numbers under wraps for now. The platform uses an aluminium structure, with two battery packs placed to give a 40/60 front-to-rear weight balance. There is also 800V battery technology, which should help cut charging times, plus a new rear-mounted dual-motor electric axle.Alpine says the set-up uses high-density battery cells to help keep weight down, while the motors, inverter and axle are packaged together in what it calls a 3-in-1 unit. There is also aluminium suspension, plus new braking and steering systems. In other words, Alpine is trying very hard to make sure the electric A110 is still small, sharp and fun, rather than quick but heavy. The current A110 has built its reputation on lightness, feeling and balance rather than silly power figures. The current Alpine A110 is famous for its light weight and agility. The French company will be aiming for its new EV to be the same (Alpine)The Goodwood appearance will not just be about the future, though. Alpine will also bring along a selection of A110 models that show how the car has evolved from rally hero to modern sports car. On Thursday 9 July, an “Alpine Moment” will bring together the A110 FUTURE and several landmark A110s, with an E20 Formula One car demonstration run as the finale.Alpine’s wider line-up will also be on show, including the A290 electric hot hatch and the A390, a five-seat sport fastback with 470bhp. The A390 will run in the First Glance batch every day of the festival, while the A290 will appear in the manufacturer batch on the Thursday. There will be plenty of motorsport content, too. F1 stars Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto will head up a five-driver BWT Alpine Formula One Team line-up, joined by Alpine Academy and reserve drivers Nina Gademan, Paul Aron and Alex Dunne. The next A110 is still some way off being ready for showrooms, but Goodwood visitors will at least get to see the electric future of Alpine in motion. For a brand built on lightness, handling and a bit of French flair, this could be one of the most important reinventions yet.
