The witness, Okpoziakpo Eloho, who testified on Thursday as the 14th prosecution witness before Justice H. Muazu, said investigations by the police revealed that the stated purpose for the release of the funds was fraudulent.

A prosecution witness in the ongoing trial of former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, has told the Federal Capital Territory High Court sitting in Abuja that the $6.23million allegedly released by the apex bank for a foreign election observer mission was “pure theft.”

The witness, Okpoziakpo Eloho, who testified on Thursday as the 14th prosecution witness before Justice H. Muazu, said investigations by the police revealed that the stated purpose for the release of the funds was fraudulent.

Led in evidence by the prosecution counsel and Director of Public Prosecutions, Rotimi Oyedepo, Eloho, a Commissioner of Police attached to the Fraud Unit at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, told the court that the entire sum of $6,230,000 was released on Emefiele’s approval.

“The entire money was released. We saw the approval of the governor,” the witness told the court.
