A prosecution witness in the trial of former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, on Friday, July 3, told the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja that the alleged fraudulent withdrawal of $6.2 million from the apex bank forced one of the CBN's special dollar accounts into a negative balance of over N2.8billion.
The 15th prosecution witness, Jim Osayande Obazee, who served as the Federal Government's special investigator into the CBN, made the disclosure while testifying before Justice Hamza Muazu in Emefiele's ongoing trial over an alleged $6.23million fraud linked to the 2023 general elections.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is prosecuting Emefiele on an amended 20-count charge bordering on alleged conspiracy, criminal breach of trust, forgery, obtaining by false pretences, and conferment of corrupt advantage involving $6,230,000.
