Cleanup operations continued across Sofia after a powerful thunderstorm and torrential rain swept through the capital, leaving behind widespread damage, including fallen trees, flooded streets, blocked underpasses, and temporary disruptions to electricity and public transportation in several neighborhoods.
According to the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology, between 15 and 30 liters of rain per square meter fell over Sofia within a short period. Combined with strong winds, the downpour caused traffic disruptions and prompted nearly 100 emergency reports involving fallen trees and branches, flooded road sections, and underpasses. Despite the scale of the storm, no serious injuries were reported.
One of the most alarming incidents took place in the garden opposite the Military Club, where a tree collapsed onto a bench occupied by two women and a child. The three narrowly escaped without serious injuries.
By early Wednesday morning, the effects of the storm were still visible throughout central Sofia. Numerous branches remained scattered across streets and sidewalks, particularly along Hristo Belchev, Angel Kanchev, and Solunska streets, where residents and business owners were seen clearing leaves, branches, and debris left behind by the storm.
