Progressive Slovakia also alleges the contract was tailored to benefit a firm linked to a mayor from the ruling Smer party.

A reconstruction project at the Defence Ministry has sparked controversy after workers were seen creating a faux brick wall by stamping and painting a brick pattern onto plaster covering an existing brick fence.

The wall surrounds the ministry’s future headquarters, known as Kukurica (Corn), where Defence Minister Robert Kaliňák (Smer) will be based.

The opposition party Progressive Slovakia (PS), which drew attention to the wall in a video published at the end of June, has filed complaints with the General Prosecutor’s Office and the Public Procurement Office, questioning both the procurement process and the execution of the €958,000 (including VAT) contract to renovate the fence.

“This Potemkin wall is a classic example of Smer theft,” said PS leader Michal Šimečka.
