Spending defence budget funds on roads and hospitals has become a key plank of the Fico government’s response to the need for readiness in increasingly turbulent times, when war is at the European Union’s doorstep. Not unlike his claims that Slovakia will send “not a single bullet” to Ukraine and that his allies in the European Union are mostly warmongers, the focus is on dual-use projects – Fico’s way to show the Slovak public just how committed to peace their government is.
