Authorities are investigating a tragic N1 bus crash that resulted in 16 fatalities and left many injured, with a preliminary report expected within 48 hours.
Transport Minister Barbara Creecy and Deputy Minister Mkhuleko Hlengwa have conveyed their condolences to the families of the 16 individuals who lost their lives in a bus crash on the N1 in the Western Cape. They have also instructed authorities to conduct an investigation into the incident.
“Transport Minister Barbara Creecy and Deputy Minister Mkhuleko Hlengwa have expressed their deepest condolences to the families who lost loved ones in the tragic bus crash on the N1,'' Department of Transport spokesperson Collen Msibi said.
The crash occurred in the early hours of Thursday, 2 July 2026, at Gulfstream Garage on the N1. It involved a bus transporting 78 passengers, including children, from Cape Town to Idutywa in the Eastern Cape.
The bus reportedly overturned, resulting in 16 fatalities and leaving 20 occupants injured. The injured were taken to Worcester Hospital, while 43 passengers reportedly refused medical treatment.
