AI might be coming for many of our jobs, but one sector is still hiring: skilled trades like plumbing, electrical work, and engineering, which often come with paid apprenticeship programs (subsidized by the unions that offer them). Traditionally, these fields have been overwhelmingly male-dominated — and still are — but more and more women are finding a way in. It’s not hard to see the appeal: Union trade jobs in New York, for instance, often pay more than $100 an hour, with benefits and pension plans that put even the cushiest corporate jobs to shame.
