Sealdah Division is also planning to restructure the Circular Line pf Suburban Services to address the acute platform scarcity at Kolkata station (KOAA).The Sealdah Railway Division is set to introduce 14 new local train services from July 6, 2026, for the six suburban sections to address the growing daily needs and cut down the peak-hour crowding. According to the officials, these new services will include two electric multiple units (EMU) including an air-conditioned one for Sealdah-Barasat section, two trains also from each Diamond Harbour section, Canning section, Lakkhikantopur section, Dum Dum Cantonment - Hasnabad section, Krishnanagar section, and Shantipur-Krishnanagar-Amghata section. "This new plan is a direct response to passengers daily travel needs and designed to cut down peak-hour crowding, offer better comfort, and provide smoother metro connectivity. We are fully committed to constantly listening to our commuters and upgrading our network to ensure their daily journeys are reliable, safe, and completely hassle-free," said Rajeev Saxena, Divisional Railway Manager of Sealdah at a press conference on Wednesday. Mr. Saxena also said that the railways is planning to restructure the Circular Line pf Suburban Services to address the acute platform scarcity at Kolkata station (KOAA) aiming to make it a major coaching terminal station in future. Officials said that the Sealdah division is restructuring of Circular Line Suburban Services to handle more mail and express trains. A corridor of 6 hours from 11.15 am to 5.15 pm is also being created to make Platform 1 of KOAA available for long distance trains by originating trains from Tala station during off-peak period."The primary objective of this restructuring of Circular Line is to address acute platform scarcity at Kolkata Station (KOAA) triggered by a steady rise in long-distance Mail, Express, and Train on demand (TOD) services. Currently, Platform No. 1—the station’s only platform with direct concourse access—is exclusively tied up for suburban operations daily between 07:30 am and 9 pm With other platforms already operating at near saturation levels, long-distance passengers have faced delays and congestion due to non-availability of platforms," he said.
