New Delhi: Iran has invited the presidents of BJP and Congress to attend the state funeral of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, which begins later this week.Invitations have been extended to BJP national president Nitin Nabin, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, and Congress foreign affairs department chairman Salman Khurshid for the multi-day funeral ceremonies.Sources said the Congress has not yet taken a decision on the leader to be deputed for the ceremonies. However, the party is expected to be represented on the occasion. The Government of India will be represented by an official delegation led by Bihar Governor Lt Gen (Retd) Syed Ata Hasnain and Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita, following the invitation extended to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.On Tuesday, Modi held a telephone conversation with Iranian President Dr Masoud Pezeshkian, during which the two leaders discussed the latest developments in West Asia and the road ahead. Pezeshkian briefed the Prime Minister on the recent developments in the region. Modi welcomed the understanding reached between Tehran and Washington and reaffirmed India's long-standing position that all issues should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy. Modi stressed the need for sustained efforts to secure lasting peace and stability in the region, while also safeguarding freedom of navigation and commerce. India is hoping for the smooth passage of vessels carrying energy supplies to its ports through the Strait of Hormuz.The funeral ceremonies, delayed due to the conflict, will begin with Khamenei's body lying in state at Tehran's Grand Mosalla complex. The erstwhile Supreme Leader of Iran will be buried in his hometown of Mashhad on July 9. Delegations from Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Syria, Lebanon, Russia, China and several Central Asian states are expected to attend the ceremonies, ET had reported last week.
